Alternatives to Windmills
Windmills have been around for centuries, but with the advances in technology there are several new technologies that are offering alternatives to the large windmills of the past.
What is a Windmill?
A windmill is used to convert wind energy into useful energy. Initially, it was used to grind grain and pump water but with reforms in invention, it has been used as a power generator. Modern windmills which are used in the process of generating electrical energy from wind energy are known as wind turbines.
Wind Turbine – Wind energy converter
Wind turbine is the modern form of windmill used for energy generation. From 20th century, this type of energy generator has gained popularity and is still in great demand. From the day of its existence, wind turbine or wind generator has evolved into different shapes and sizes. The present day windmill alternative – wind turbine has got well-defined shape to give maximum output. The long blades of the wind energy converters help in gaining greater speeds and thus higher outputs.
Windmills with large or small wind turbines are installed in locations which have good wind speeds. Larger the turbine, longer the blades that are designed to increase the electrical energy produced. Efficient design contributes to the production of increased electrical energy.
Wind Turbine – Ideal place to install Wind turbine which is a windmill alternative have to be installed in a place which experiences moderate wind during the year. A plain area without any hindrance with average wind throughout the year will be ideal to set up windmills which can generate power from the wind energy. It is not necessary to setup a windmill farm. It would be good enough to set up a windmill with small wind turbine and generators nearby your home to generate power for daily consumption.
Home Windmill – Large Windmill alternative Construction of windmills at home will be a good choice for people living in a place where they experience seasonal winds. Residents extend their cooperation as home windmills have the capacity to produce power to meet their daily home requirements. Basically, a home windmill should be 30 feet tall and free from trees in and around an area of one acre. If you meet all the requirements you can install home windmills which serve as an alternative source of energy.
Modern Approach – Alternate to large Windmill People in search of an alternative to windmills are using modern approaches to replace the traditional big windmills.
Here are few windmill alternatives which are being adopted by people: Wind Dam Wind dam which is a recent invention has got spinnaker sail and a wind turbine to generate power. A Wind dam can be installed in cliffs and valleys where the wind is powerful enough to produce power to meet the need of homes. The wind dam is capable of doing 120 MW annually which would power 35 homes.
Highway power and super turbines Instead of searching a natural windy place, this new system proposed will use the wind generated on highway by cars. The new system will not be space-consuming but will have the capacity to power a house.
Another windmill alternative which is based on the natural wind is the super turbines which are installed offshore or in open sea. The special design allows the super turbines to take advantage of the wind and produce power floating on the sea or from offshore.
